StarGarden MoonWatch for the Full Moon, May 2nd, 2007
I’m Maria Theresa Maggi, intuitive astrologer her on KRFP in Moscow, Idaho, and you’re listening to the StarGarden MoonWatch for the full moon of May 2, 2007.
The moon is full at the beginning of May, on Beltane, in the sign of Scorpio. Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac, and, like Aries, with which we began this lunar cycle, Scorpio shares an affinity with the planet Mars. But in Scorpio, the battles we take up are internal and soulful, rather than external. Scorpio is the sign of sex, death and rebirth, and when we encounter Scorpio energy we also encounter the mystery of these processes, and the desire we feel to merge with their power. If Aries is the paramedic energy that rushes us to the rescue, Scorpio is the energy of the surgeon who must calmly cut open, repair or replace vital organs. In Scorpio we literally seek to hold the mystery of life in our very hands. This desire can lead us into deep and emotional power struggles, both within ourselves, with those we love, and in the world we live in. The deep water of a Scorpio moon can take us to the sea bottom of our emotional motives, sometimes kicking and screaming, where they can either transform or destroy us. Often transformation and destruction dance intimately when Scorpionic energy runs high. Scorpio is the only sign with a series of symbolic animals to represent its evolutionary mandate: The Scorpion, the lizard, the eagle, and the phoenix. Each animal widens its range and strategic relationship as a hunter to its prey, until we arrive at the ultimate mystery of the phoenix, a mythical bird that sings a haunting song, bursts itself into flames, and then rises out of its own ashes.
The sun and mercury are in Taurus opposite this Scorpio full moon, so the moon may be reflecting a depth of feeling about issues having to do with the earth itself, the literal soil and the nourishment that comes from it, and our own need to surrender ourselves to the mystery of natural process in order to allow our earth to heal itself and us. In his essay ”Coyote Wildfire,” smokejumper Joe Fox reflects on the irony of motive in fighting wildfires. His words are a good example of the emotional mirror a Scorpio moon can hold up for us:
“Here is the irony. We wilderness wanderers imagine we can escape the deadening travails of civilization by leaping into wildlands. Yet we irrevocably trammel the wilderness through our suppression activities. And we know this.. Fire suppression alters wildlands and begins to convert them into the insufferable managed landscapes we seek to evade. Why do we persist?
Firefighters who recognize this irony but won’t reconcile it may be similar to introspective, maturing hunters who are on the verge of giving up hunting. Such hunters may be finding it harder to rationalize what they do, but they are not yet able to give up the adrenaline rush, the personal challenge of endurance and skill, the moment of fatal decision, and, for some, the final conversation with their prey, in which they ask permission to take its life.”
Here are some suggestions for each of the sun signs for how the full moon half of this lunar cycle can help us face and release ourselves from the power struggles that may keep us from authentic transformation:
Aries: You may act or feel responsible for someone older, or you could make a sudden and serious adjustment in how you express yourself. It’s important to be steady and responsible in a situation that is volatile or unpredictable.
Taurus: You may be having to surrender to a big change in a partnership. You could be leaving home or feeling alone. Yet the key to making the change comes from taking responsibility for being on your own, which actually frees you.
Gemini: You may feel a need to change a habit having to do with women or how you may be holding too tightly to past beliefs. Your work or health or that of a child you feel responsible for could be part of this comprehensive change.
Cancer: To secure the future you want to manifest, you may have to transform something essential in your own creative will. It may be a time to adjust to the sudden and unexpected understanding that you can do more with less.
Leo: A relationship may change in a way that requires a more active role from you. Or you have to act carefully to establish more responsibility for what you desire in your career or professional reputation. Play it close to the vest.
Virgo: Your conversations may reveal secrets or disclosures from a partner, friend or group that prompt you to dig your heels in about a philosophy or spiritual vision that brings comfort. Yet you also seek a way to help and understand.
Libra: A partner wants to keep what you would rather change. Or financial deals or values you kept under the table now come to light. Either way a discrepancy is disclosed. As habits change, you may restructure a future career or life plan.
Scorpio: Either you or your partner have a strong will to stay on a steady course. To this end, you may want to keep some things hidden, but a serious public situation with a child or a career may require that you suddenly reveal how you feel.
Sagittarius: You may dig into your emotional past, or be discovering a hidden side of your emotional self, or that of a family member. This could be deeply transformative, and your own healing could take a big leap in the process.
Capricorn: You may feel a deep attraction to a friend or a cause that comes from a steady, grounded place in your own heart. This also helps you surrender to the limitations or the seriousness of the situation. Trust your intuition.
Aquarius: You may feel it’s critical to read between the lines where a public or institutional policy is concerned in order to maintain stability in your home or family. It’s hard work to hammer out a contract, but worth the extra trouble.
Pisces: You may feel drawn to a powerful woman or teacher who you feel will help you ground your thoughts or communications. Or perhaps you embark on a journey of any kind that requires you work hard and take on extra responsibility.
This full moon falls on Beltane, which, in the pagan calendar, is the cross quarter, or half way point between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. It is the traditional day for dancing around the May Pole, and celebrating life, sex, and fertility. On a day when we celebrate the regenerative power of life and all its pleasures, the Scorpio moon also plunges us deep into its transformative mysteries for the next two weeks. Wildland firefighter Joe Fox asks that we “envision firefighters becoming fire guiders.” He speculates poetically that “perhaps my children will some day enter the wilderness, stare a coyote wildfire in the eye, get its mark, measure its ferocity, and leave it alone to an uncontorted destiny as a thousand twinkling embers reflect the inscrutable starry night.” Although Scorpio is a water sign, such a vision can remind us of Scorpio’s power to have us merge with our own legacy, and the evolutionary mystery that calls us to move beyond the hunter and the hunted, and do as the phoenix must, burst into flames of passionate awareness and then rise out of our own ashes. At this full moon, perhaps we are drawn to nothing less than an elemental transformation so that we may show others the way to shine our lights, shed some light and keep it light!
