StarGarden MoonWatch for the New Moon, March 29th, 2006
I’m Maria Theresa Maggi, intuitive astrologer on KRFP in Moscow, Idaho and you’re listening to the StarGarden MoonWatch for the new moon of March 29, 2006.
The lunar cycle begins again at the end of March with a solar eclipse in the sign of Aries, the ram. On March 20, we entered the gateway to Spring in the northern hemisphere at the Spring Equinox, as the journey of the sun through the tropical zodiac began again by re-entering the sign of Aries. When the moon returns to join the sun in Aries, it carries the potential to reflect the highest expression of this sign: the warrior who lends his or her personal strength to the life of the community. So when the moon eclipses that light by standing directly between the earth and sun, we are symbolically invited to experience the shadow side of the Aries archetype. Typically Aries marks the green shoots that signal the beginning of the season, the gunshot that marks the start of the race, the spark that lights the fire, the anger that flares at an insult, and the sexual urge that pulls us toward those we are attracted to. Yet at this time, we explore the underside of these typical associations in order that the true path of the warrior may run more deeply and fully within each of us.
As the first sign, Aries is the dawn or newborn of the zodiac, and embodies the active, inquisitive energy and impatience of being young. In its youthful exuberance and embodiment of action, Aries has an innate need to flirt and stir things up, which can come across as rather one-pointed and self-absorbed. But this new moon and eclipsed energy of the sun, in combination with Saturn, may shift that energy toward invoking the wisdom or pace of maturity, and the responsibility for action that maturity brings. An important question to ask as we begin again in the next two weeks is how do we find in ourselves the way to honor and serve others, rather than simply defending who we are or what we want? The placement of Mars in Gemini in this new moon chart can bring a wit and versatility of action and expression to this shift in focus. Instead of pushing our own agenda through, we may see how playfully trading or inverting positions, even momentarily, may bring a new respect for those situations or people we have opposed, resisted or resented, or that which we shove away within ourselves. Some of us may realize the phrase, “don’t just stand there, do something!” has more resonance when we invert it to read, “Don’t just do something, stand there!” No matter which one of these positions we tend to favor, in the coming weeks and months we have the opportunity to to feel how riding the seesaw is actually part of a single, fluid dynamic.
As the companion planet to Aries, Mars converses easily with Venus and Neptune in Aquarius at this eclipse, and so the slow, detailed pace necessary to cultivate the subtleties of emotional and sensual intimacy or alliance is available to us as the “rush” of Aries energy slows down to appreciate how tenderness is a form of bravery. e.e. cummings poem number #35 offers a beautiful example of the brave new beginning available to us inside of this tenderness:
somewhere I have never traveled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things that enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me
though I have closed myself as fingers
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skillfully, mysteriously) her first rose
or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death amd forever with each breathing
(I do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands
Here are some suggestions for each of the sun signs for how the singular passion of Aries can take on the “both/and” mentality of its opposite at this new moon and solar eclipse:
Aries: Some cherished plans for the future may be significantly altered. Yet there is also an opportunity to shift a situation that has been oppressive to you. Accepting a new plan can bring the gift of cooperation.
Taurus: You may feel left out of the loop as family or friends make plans you don’t agree with. Even though you see things differently, staying the unlikely course others have chosen may bring a surprising peace.
Gemini: A legal or educational contract could shift your beginning point or range of motion. The action or plan you thought you’d take now may rely on communicating with someone who becomes an unlikely ally.
Cancer: Professional or institutional contracts must either be revamped or require more initiative from you. All partnerships may undergo a change from the status quo. Yet new friends and support will also appear as needed.
Leo: Responsibility for setting a new course in education or travel may fall to you. Since freedom and responsibility go hand in hand, you have the opportunity to experience the truth that you can’t have one without the other.
Virgo: If you’ve been feeling you have to be the one to initiate meaningful communication in your immediate environment, now is a good time to let that go. You may find that you welcome that change.
Libra: If you tend to jump in with both feet to share what you think or want to do with a partner, now might be a good time to hold off. This brings a rare opportunity to listen first and be sure of what you want to share.
Scorpio: Ordinarily you don’t like answering to others about your work routine. But at this time you may actually enjoy showing them how you organize or prioritize what you do on your own. Everyone learns from this.
Sagittarius: Things you think of as fun are all harder to do. Yet there is also a variety ways others can help balance this challenge, if you accept it might mean being more fully conscious of what needs to be healed.
Capricorn: A basic emotional starting point at home, with family, or deep within could shift. A timeline may be handed down to you that has its own pace built into it, bringing surprising, deep change, if you trust it.
Aquarius: If you want to talk with a partner or friend about future plans with a deep, more comprehensive approach, the best way to do that is to listen first. Or if you would change a course of action, wait and see instead.
Pisces: Everything’s different, and you’re different, too. Even the simplest routine task involves paying close methodical attention. Yet somewhere, deep within you, there’s energy to go with it and shine.
Even though the eclipse is not visible in North America, its path crosses many countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where our government dominates, occupies, or ignores the people. So there is ample opportunity collectively to trade in our “emperor” complex in all spheres of influence for a more generous and equalizing course of action. As any old-fashioned feminist would say, the personal IS political. Realizing this may involve feeling our way, one step at a time, perhaps through the dark, to find, honor and trust a genuinely new way shine our lights, shed some light, and keep it light!
